Section 6 of your textbook focuses on how to get a job in the profession of instructional design. These rules can also apply to educational technology as well since the two are so intertwined.

Take a look at a few of the sources provided for job openings from lesson 1 and search for at least 3 positions that are of interest to you. My Eligibility | I would qualify for this position in education, but not in experience. However, this job starts at the intermediate level and requires less experience than the other jobs I researched. I would try asking about internship programs within this company or other companies to gain the necessary experience. It would also be exciting to utilize instructional design in the field of healthcare. I can see the connection between healthcare and education. http://www.careerbuilder.com/ | After viewing this job on www.monster.com, I went to the company’s website to view other positions. I wanted to know if there were entry level jobs available since the job title is for an Instructional Designer II. I did not find many entry level positions or internships, but was pleased to see that a degree in education would be considered for employment. I also found on http://www.serco-na.com/ that this company was primarily contracted to work with the federal government; specifically the military. | Although I lack the 4-5 experience requirement for this position, this company seemed very open to develop a person who they thought was creative enough and had been exposed to e-learning enough to work for their company. I would enjoy working for this company more than the others I have researched because their focus in the fields of education and life sciences, and I am very familiar with both. http://www.astd.org/ |
- Remember that the field of instructional/educational technology is not just focused on education, but on business and industry as well. Look at the resources provided on page 258 in chapter 25 and select one of these links and complete the self assessment. What did you learn about yourself from the assessment?
I took a career assessment for an Entry Level Instructional Design Specialist on the American Society for Training and Development website (http://www.astd.org/astd/careers). According to this website, entry level positions in the field of instructional design require 0-2 years of experience. Through this assessment I found that I possessed more experience in instructional design than I originally thought. My score in delivering training was on target for the equivalent of 2 years experience. Many of the skills I use in teaching are very similar in this field such as motivating my audience to learn and preparing needed training materials according to the specific needs of learners. However, my weakest areas were in tasks that require more experience in the business field such as building and maintaining client relationships and actually creating instructional design material according to the needs of clients. I can see how more training in the areas I lack will bring me up to speed. In some areas, I only need to apply what I have learned in education to the fields of military, medical or technology. For example, my current clients are my students, parents and community. The same connections can be used in any career that utilizes instructional design.

This journal is useful to me in my career because I will be able to research educational practices that are currently helpful in my field. This journal is specifically useful because of the combination of different subjects.
